Welcome to Developing Motivation and Engagement Within the Classroom

Three Basic Human Needs Requirements

Autonomy- demonstrating pride and effort into their own learning. If personal decisions are not met, then the results will be a teacher-centered environment, and the student will get bored (Millacci, 2022).

Competence- the student's internal feeling in knowing that they are able to grow. Lack of competency will result no academic growth (Millacci, 2022) and the student will not flourish.

Relatedness- the feeling of connection to the classroom. If no relatedness is made then there will be no bonding between the student, the teacher and the student's classroom peer (Millacci, 2022).

How Sociocultural and Cognitive Factors Affect Students in the Classroom

As the student ages, their motivation and engagement for learning decreases (Parrish, 2022). This can be due to things such as losing their self-esteem and their lack of a growing mind- set (Millacci, 2022).

How Teachers Can Overcome These Factors in the Classroom

Teachers can improve the student's self-esteem and to help to regain their growing mind-set, by allowing them to be in the center stage of their own learning. Scaffolding is an important process to where a student learns new information and relate it to their personal experiences (Millacci, 2022).

Ways to Promote or Hinder Students Motivation and Engagement

Promote:

  • Support students in their educational goals (Anderman et al., 2024, p. 404).
  • Provide regular feedback on the students goal assessments (Anderman et al., 2024, p. 404).

Hinder:

  • When teachers are bored with their own lesson plans, students are more than likely bored (Millacci, 2022).
  • If teacher-centered lesson plans are created, it is then meaningless for the student (Millacci, 2022).

Four Ways Teachers and Parents Can Improve Students Motivation

  1. Make an effort to find each student's interests (favorite sport teams, activities, or what they did over the weekend) (Millacci, 2022).
  2. Have parents involve in your classroom (positive phone calls home, invite, or provide weekly class information) (Millacci, 2022).
  3. It is encouraged for parents to be involved in their child's homework (Millacci, 2022).
  4. Make lessons plans more meaningful (Millacci, 2022).
